The distance determines how much gravitational force is acting on it. I'm not sure what criteria we use for determining planets, but if the amount of gravitational force is a factor...

Pluto is a planet based on the definition that it is a natural large spherical object that orbits a star and does not generate heat by nuclear fusion.

If a planet needs to have an atmosphere to be considered a planet, then Mercury fails that requirement as well, although the reason is that the atmosphere evaporated away from Mercury due to the intense heat from the sun.

The fact that it has an irregular orbit does not discern it from being a planet. It's just discrimination to judge it that way. "Xena" has an even more irregular orbit, as I recall.

Sorry for making a boring post. I can't sleep.

If Pluto stops to be a planet then the horoscope people, the voodoo shamans and sailor Pluto would get in serious trouble.
Maybe Pluto is small and useless, but it still belongs to our solar system. Xena can join too.

Just so you know, farther from the sun, the more irregular the orbit.

Wasn't the reason they wanted to ditch Pluto as a planet because of its size? Pluto is smaller than the moon, the difference is that it isn't gravitating around a planet.

err...i've known about this since like middle school...this isn't new news.
the debate about pluto being called a planet or not and the new planet, xena...anyways, isn't pluto suppose to be called a "moon" technically. because of it's size, scientists wants pluto to be a moon, but since in the past they already called it a planet... -.- but it couldn't possibly be a moon since, like dante obscuri said, it isn't revolving around anything. since it isn't revolving around another huge body mass, then it should just be called a planet then, since it isn't a ball of gas, which is a star.

so they should just keep it to a planet since it's a big mass of ice and blah blah blah. yea.. tehehhee.
