I say the Samurai win both times. They won't ever lose in one-on-one fights, but in 100 vs 100 they will have some problems. But even if the Spartan have formations and long spears and shields, I still can not imagine that 100 Samurai in full armor and weaponry would lose, they would defenitively find a way to defeat the Spartan.

Well, Hoplites are at a setback since none of them probably knew of steel. But really, they fight in little skirts. They are bad ass.

Play Rome: Total War. Phalanx Formation!

And since the Samurai have no horses, they will have trouble flanking a phalanx. And if they did have horses, they'd still need to be very careful as really long pointy things tend to disagree with dudes on horses.

pikes in pretty much every game is the counter to combat horses

however bows + horses = dead spartans cause of hit and run

then again spartans also had a cavalry division supporting the hoplites

in 1 vs 1, i think taht samurais wins

in melee attack, i think spartans win(remember of a barbarian invasion wich samurais lose because they were used to 1 vs 1combats)

anyways, go ninjas and long bow archery
its not that i dont respect your opinion, i just dont want to hear it!

Which barbarian invasion are you talking about zoik?

I say with their equipment, Spartans lose in both cases. Because Samurai have bows, forming a phalanx is simply suicide, it's like lining up as a big target that's really hard to miss. Also, even if the phalanx is modified to be able to take on arrow fire, it will need to lessen the ranks and spread out, thus decreasing its efficiency against infantry.
Phalanx is a very slow formation, so cavalry is not needed to flank it. There were many cases in Greeko-Roman wars when cohort legions split and surrounded the phalanx from different sides, obliterating it.
The main base of any phalanx formation is the will to fight, and that obviously decreases when the formation is being fired at from distance then surrounded. So obviously, it'd be foolish to use phalanx formation against Samurai.
In the end, it would either come down to Samurai shooting down every last Spartan, or beating the less tight formation of Spartans in close combat.

Either way, all of that is bullshit because 100 Mongolians Keshiks would own the two groups combined, given that all 300 warriors are given horses.
