my english is not so good either, so i understand well lol
for the second type of damas, i didn't find the name in english, but anyway it's more than just binding 2 different types of steel, because there are a lot of layers (up to some hundreds)..... (let's say it's a very good binding ;o)
anyway the 2 system hand out great swords

Of course. Both systems created very effective (and beautiful) blades. And to the layers, best pattern-welded blades (including katanas, but not only them) had thousands of layers. But I really see katanas superiority not in the quality of the blade (some other weapons in eurasia came very close to that quality) but in it's overall universality. Katana is great at both stabbing and slashing and can be used both one and two handed. Most other blades can't do that. But I'm not saying that it is a lot better. On my personal list I would give katana max of 100p. while the best european, indian and arabian blades would get 85-95p.
But well, we wandered so far away from the original topic of this thread that it looks like a compleately different one now.

yeah... so about the spartans > wearing their armors was not detrimental to their speed and effectiveness because they were used to wear them.... there were even an olympic discipline where they had to run with heavy armors on ^^" i think they would have a chance, depending on the battlefield

well. if the samurais feel like theyre losing, they will just slit their stomach and perform that bushido style.

lol, A samurai would only cut open his stomach if he needs to regain his honor and dying in battle is a great honor, if the samurai feel like theyre losing and run away then they have to cut open their stomach, and bsides, the samurai are wearing armore so it would be quite hard to cut oben their stomaches, and btw this bushido style is a livestyle, to cut open your own stomach in order to regain your honor is called seppuku, and I'm not sure if you are allowed to perform it without the permission or order of your master.

i'm not sure, but i think they could do it without the order of a master.... (samurais != dogs )

Now that I think of it in the movie "the last samurai" there was a man who cut open his stomach after beeing taken prisoner by the samurai, who defeated the emperors army in the first battle, so I think a samurai can do it if he feels like he has lost his honor, also in the manga "lone wolf and cub" there are few samurai who cut open their stomach without an order
