Mechs either need to be sized on a scale similar to that of a ten story building, or basically powered armor for troops. Too much inbetween and they're wholly ineffective. They're too big of a target to miss with handheld heavy weapons, but too small of an object for armor good enough to deflect said portable wepons.
A massive tank would be much more in line, something along the lines of a Bolo.
Mecha where thought out to be weapons platforms, and as such their height would give them a far reach, and their two legged design would give them broad acces to the type of weapons you'd equip.
Such as if you wanted something with arms that can pick up and use oversized weapons, or something that carrys around with it emplaced turrents and mortars/artillery missles, rocket pods, etc.
For powered armor, it's uses should be obvious.
Just a note though, medium sized mecha are possible with today's tech, they just wouldn't be feasiable due to the cost of our actual cutting edge tech [aggragated diamond nanorods, ceramic/fabric hybrids realying heavily on CNTs, megawatt level lasers which need high energy demands, what could only be provided by a nuclear reactor, which no one would want to stick on anything that small even though it's easily possible and probably the only means of power, and so on]
Gotta say, a frickin' Gundam would probably kick ass. I don't see one being financially possible, though, and I suppose that since the stuff their armor is made of doesn't actually exist, there might be a few problems making them, you know, safe for combat.
But anyways, if you're going to create a walking tank, make a Metal Gear. Those things are awesome.
Aw yeah, a metal gear would rule.
But what I think should be focused on in scientific research nowadays is developing fusion reactors, or developing some means of safely putting a nuclear reactor in anything.
Gundams suck hard.
And I've got a better material than their shitty armor.
It would be a composite material made purely from Carbon Nanotubes with a core of some element [no buckling making them unbelieavbly strong] and Aggragated Diamond Nanorods to take the most extreme compressive forces and to deflect abrasive properties [at joints and as a surface coating to protect from atmospheric abrasion, bullets, laser ablation, spalding, etc.]
And then I'd give it a big ol Solenoid Qunch Gun [31337 railgun] with uranium slugs coated in a special carbon coating to protect from friction, hook this up to a direct feed from a fusion plant in the center of the mech [effectively unlimited power for combat time of up to around 4 months] and accelerate the .3c slugs with a tap from that, and power the rest of the mech. Rather than use tiny pellets of A-M on the bottom of the slugs to accelerate them in a controlled micro explosion inside a mag bottle. [EM field]
Or a particle cannon. Or C plasma weapon.

Since I'm dignifying that retarded post with a response, Wing Zero was simply a more powerful weapons platform than all of the other Gundam units in the Gundam Wing universe, had a better powerplant, and so on. Basically the best thing in that universe.
It still sucks.

Anyway I always thought mechs were a damn stupid idea. Their too big, to expensive, to useless. Unlike a tank or a plane they don't specialize so they would suck at all and fall to anti tank guns.
To me the future is always getting smaller, I think a bio-enhancement suit would be far more useful in battle. Or remote control mini tanks capable of a few heavy blasts each for strategic attacks.
Well this is going to sound stupid but I thought robotic bees would be a pretty effective weapon, make them remote, and solar powered, and make it so thier stinger gives as powerful of a sting you can give without jeopardizing them, so if you swarm these its be almost impossible to shoot them, you could hide them anywhere, and if they're solar powered you wouldnt need to fuel them, also you wouldnt need to kill you enemy either, so its a peaceful solution to victory(now I dont care about carnage, but it would make it all the more easier to deploy these without getting a backlash from the public).
I know it sounds stupid, but I think its a pretty cool idea.
Sorry for going off topic.
