Any group is vulnerable to the possibility of corruption. So to just pick on the UN makes you sound like a hippie who has nothing better to do.

Talamare is right. To focus only on the media-influenced events of Iraq as your argument for the UN being "useless sh-t" and ignoring the millions of people who are able to live another day because of efforts from associations like the UN, make you sound like a hippie who has nothing better to do (aside from comments like "that's so right man!").

The point here is not to say the UN is a group of holy men bent on restoring good to the earth. If you want to change things, it will be to persuade the people who have the power to do so. If the Senate lays down demands for change and action in the UN, they would probably succeed, since the possibility of losing US funding could devastate the UN.

What is f_cked up is that you believe the US is the root of all evil in the world. There is a lot of messed up things in this world. I suggest you get used to it and look for working solutions. Otherwise, don't whine ignorantly or be flamed by people like me.

    F______________________CK!!!!!!!!

Whats f_cked up is typing a huge response and getting it lost in cyberspace. But thanks nataku, you hit the key points.

I was basically saying that the UN is a governing body that has neither the means nor the autonomy to enforce its (often good) mandates. The political process is fraught with hindrances, and governments frequently run the risk of becoming static. I do not think this has happened to the UN, and I believe the UN's mission is notable and should be supported. It simply needs to power to do so. "Globalization," though I hesitate to use the word, has brought about a lot of progress in the world, especially in terms of economic prosperity. Foolish, isolationist policy undermines these worthy goals and potential progress'. A good example would be the recent Global Agriculture trade agreement that failed. It is a solid fact that free trade promotes economic prosperity for all parties involved as a general rule (makes more sense if you know what comparitive advantage is).

Well. I think that was the gist of it.

YES, the UN is just a piece of (almost) useless Sh-t!
OK, the question is why the UN is so f_cked up and I will not mention the US fundings, this problem has already been explained.
The biggest problem with the UN is, that they have NO power to achive any goals. All they do is talk and make suggestions what HAS to be done, but they can't do it themself. For example: Country X get's a dictator and starts a war with another country, now it is hated by the rest of the world.
What can the UN do about it? Almost nothing.
They can "suggest" to set up a boycot against country X, but countrys A, B and C may thing: "We like country X, they are doing just fine, we don't care about the boycot, we'll continue to trade with them." And now the pretty boycot idea is ruined.
So it doesn't matter what is said in the UN, because the members can not be forced to do so.

Damn, I hate it! The idea of the UN is great, but even with all the worlds nations as members, they are powerless organisation. They are doing fine with helping some poor countrys and so on, but realy big problems like a dictator or a war cannot be handled by the UN.

Strictly me, but I think the UN was somewhat of a good idea. From what I learned in history, it was created to "maintain world peace." I don't know if that's really their quota anymore, what with so many selfish countries these days -_-

    they do maintain world peace
you know how many country hates US but dont attack cause of fear of being ganged up on, UN also keeps them from ganging up since half the people in the UN are the one that hate US

also the UN wont be affect if the US pulls thier funding, matter if fact its been done before for several years, US withheld thier funding for about 20years because we hate UN or some other crappy reason

UN does achieve many goals(well at least it still attempts to achieve it) not everything gets vetoed, all a small amount of over hyped stuff

Hooray, I had to read through your post about 3 times to make sense of your HORRID SPELLING.
You, my friend, are a bigoted American.

I suggest you go to China stay for a few months, and come back. Tell us if you experience ANYTHING different from America (aside from traffic laws and added weight due to the good food).

The UN is not useless, it's just that certain members of the UN are pansies. Take Britain (aka America's bitch) for example. Britain is the only country that actually supports American policy nowadays because Tony Blair is too scared to think on his own.

The things is, the UN can't do anything when two of its leading members (America and Britain) go against everyone else.
However, the UN has been very successful in other instances. Go to Africa and ask if the UN is useless or not. Go to the Balkans and ask if the UN is useless or not.
The UN has done so many things for the world, it's just that ignorant Americans don't pay attention to anything that doesn't help them directly.

    Open your eyes.

... Face it, China doesn't exactly treat their people very well. One thing that comes to mind is that they can keep people in custody without a reason wheneve they like, however long they like. Rights? What rights? That's just one reason I do not want to be a Chinese citizen.

Oh, and one difference between China and the US is that there are Chinese people around and they all speak Chinese! (Also the way the television sometimes blips and shows pretty scenery whenever TV from outside shows stuff they don't want you to see.)

Its fine if countries are afraid of the UN theory, but when they get over that now is up to America and Britain. Im pretty fine that America is the feared target of countries who hate that place (and loves war), cuz those leaders always need something to fight on so basically countries like Japan have less chance of being targeted on=)

This is off topic but I'm American and an isolationist.

On topic.I believe that the UN shoudn't exist. The existence of a governing body that large vastly increases the possibility for tyranny.
Wow. We have the EXACT same political views. Not everyday you meet another conservative isolationist, who also happened to take some latin. I think that quam is now my favorite newbie(well, not really new at all, but new to Chit Chat)!

On topic - I have about as much respect for the UN as I have for the Sudanese government. They are ineffective, corrupt, weak, and unable to stick by the resolutions and ultimatums that they make.
