Downloading fansubs = piracy. Downloading scanlations = piracy.

    it depends on your country....

soon enough, downloading a freeware under GPL with a peer to peer program will make me a pirate -_-" (thank you, stupid government)
    > isn't it in canada where you can download music without any problem ??? if it was not for the weather i might consider going there lol

about scanlations, if they are not licenced in your country, you are not in the illegality.... but not in the legality either... complicated it is ~

It doesn't depend on your country. Sure it's not punishable in your country, but it still breaks Japan's copyright laws.

exactly, but japan copyright law has no international value unless stated otherwise in your country, thus making it not illegal...
don't travel to japan or you might get caught though

Aren't copyright laws for most countries automatically made international laws by some agreement? So if you're breaking the copyright of another country then you're breaking an international copyright law.

Hehehe, I tried to look up the meaning of piracy in wikipedia, and the real, sea-faring pirates came up. I didn't know that pirates in the sea still exist in this day and age.

Back to topic... so, even if your not breaking any laws, so long as you acquire copyrighted material from another source aside from those licensed to distribute it, then it is considered piracy? Then almost everything on the net is pirated material right?

You are breaking it, but unless there's a law that calls for your arrest in your country, nothing they can do. Which is sort of a good thing.

piracy is great to the comsumer but what about the people who made it? you don't know how bloody annoying it is to work your arse off for something and then not be credited and be paid for it. buying the actual thing benifits both parties but obtaining pirated stuff only benefits the person who is receiving the stuff. but to hell with it we've all done illegal stuff like this before. right?
