Default Six Years Into The Millenium ... We're Fucked // The Future...

    April 2006...

America was a prosperous nation, for the most part at peace with the rest of the world. Sure, we had our problems, but in hindsight, those seem pretty petty to the adversities we now face. There was promise. Our future actually looked somewhat bright. It seemed as though, looking from a distance, that the world might actually turn out to be a better place after our first decade in double ought’s were up. What a viscous mirage that turned out to be.

It is six years later and all that hope is gone, flushed down the toilet along with the good image that America once enjoyed like an unwanted piece of bacon fat by the wild eyed Texan and his diversified cabinet of falsified do-gooders that we elected to look after our best interests. No longer will any of us in this lifetime awaken to a calm world at peace. It seems somewhat more likely now that one day we will wake up to a nuclear winter.

Long gone are the days of Bill Clinton and his hilarious sexual escapades. They have been replaced by trigger happy vice presidents and made up weapons of mass destruction. The dreaded “New Vietnam” in the deserts of the Middle East has arrived with all the splendor and destruction of a sandstorm filled with rose thorns and shot nails. It all happened almost too quietly to notice.

Not to be outdone, nature has reared her powerful head over and over again. From the tsunami in Asia, the seemingly constant stream of earthquakes, and the ever popular Katrina, we have been shown time and time again that no matter how technologically advanced we may think we are, we are all still nothing more than the mere playthings of this Earths great elements.

It is time to wake up, fellow planet dwellers. It is time to realize that America, indeed, the entire world, will never be the same again. The utopia that was within our grasp those few short years ago is gone forever, lost in another timeline somewhere deep in an alternate dimension that does not include guys like George Bush and Osama Bin Laden. It was almost close enough to wave goodbye as those towers fell that ominous day in September nearly five years ago.

For some reason, it just doesn’t seem right to blame ourselves. Sure, we may all have different political views, but we are not the ones who did this. It was all brought upon us by a small group of overly powerful fools. No matter which side of the conservative/liberal chalk line you may fall on, there is no denying the fact that we have somehow sailed up the proverbial shit creek. This time, instead of being without paddles, we gave them to someone else to guide us with. Now we are five minutes away from the waterfall and we can either watch the tree line complacently while we fall over the edge or we can throw the asshole with the oars out of the boat and row like hell away from the rocks.

Keep those metaphorical oars handy. One day soon we may have to brain the captain, and it will take all of us rowing at once to get ourselves out of this mess.
what a terrible place we live in...

on another note what do you think of the future we're leaving for our children??? , global warming and climate changes are everywhere, Antarctica is melting, weather is worse than ever, non renewable resources are running out, renewable resources arent being used (most likely lobbied against in government), wars are escalating and a coalition of countries has taken it upon themselves to police the world, hatemongering and fearmongering are being done by terrorists and politicans worldwide.

    ... what are we doing?

The fact is that this is not a utopic world. Things will never be perfect.

If I said that "there are prostitutes on the street at barely 12 years old, drug addiction is running rampant, the rich are oppressing the poor and downtrodden, the land is convered in a dense fog of cloud and soot, and venereal disease is on the rise," one would think that I am talking about todays world, but I am actually describing London around the end of the 19th century.

The fact is that there will always be, have always been, things wrong with the world. There will be corruption, evil, and bad environmental conditions. But this is a fact of life.

Complaining about it will not help. Neither will this depressing, gloom and doom world you are depicting, that mentions all the bad(and skews a good bit of it, in my opinion) and none of the good. Rather than complaining about it, as you post seems to be doing, why not try to make the world a better place? Why not act, instead of just talk about how screwed up the world is? But at the same time, one must always remember that no matter how much we work to make the world a better place, there will always be suffering, hardship, and all around bad things, that will make it look like we have come nowhere in our goal.

The world is a better place, I think, since the late 19th century. In many(not all) ways, it is better than it was 50 years ago, especially in the areas of "hatemongering." I think that if we work at it, like our ancestors did, rather than complain about it, as people nowadays only seem to do, it will be a better place.

In summary, I regect the doomsday picture you seem to be painting, but accept the idea that we need to change things, as long as it is actually done, not just discussed.

what exactly do you propose we do??? abandon our SUVs and McDonalds Happy Meals and start eating beans and driving Priuses??? i mean cus why would anyone do THAT???

Jakko the truth is nothing is going to change because people dont WANT it to. Guys want huge trucks to go back and forth to work, people swear McDonalds is addicting thats why theyre so fat and unhealthy, companies dont want the risk of investing in anything new, oil companies swear theres enough oil to last forever...

look at the real world Jakko. we both know its going to hell

Every time in the human timeline, people have thought that the world is ending. The circumstances now are similar if not for technological advances.

I'm not saying that the world WON'T end but what i'm trying to say is that people will move on somehow.

were the circumstances remotely similar to the ones going on now ??? were we in danger of changing our planet before? were we in danger of changing our climate? were we in danger of removing the sole natural resource that powers our everyday lives everywhere???

    Yes. Yes, and yes.

The ancient Romans hunted many animals to extinction, as did the ancient Indians(American). Throughout history, humans have changed the landscape, be it aqueducts, changing the flow of rivers, mining, ect. And many times in history people have depleted the natural resources of an area, be it sulphur, or trees, or coal.

1cor is right. There is nothing wrong with saying the world is messed up, but it always has and always will be.

Jakko and Cor are right; the world is messed up now and always has been, but we can't just sit here and complain. If we never try to DO anything, of course we're not going to change for the better (even for a little). You can't just tell people in SUVs to stop driving them, or fat people to stop eating Mickey D's and start exercising (which is odd, because it's completely against the style today). You have to start with YOURSELF (to everyone, not just to SD =P) and then at least the world will be a slightly better place.

I like the Prius, actually. ^_^ It's a really nice car. On the other hand, I really dislike cars and driving in general - if I have to, I carpool or I take public transportation, but I greatly prefer to walk (as I'm terrified of biking after an accident...). I'd love to live in a large city - mostly because they have great public transportation, and you can walk places. I love going to New York because you don't even need a car. I try my best to recycle. I don't eat fast food very often, and I try to eat healthy foods (cereal is the best. If I could eat only cereal and fruit every day I would. But that much is bad...) and I try to exercise.

And I know that's not enough. I'm not going to tell people what to do until I take a more environmental route everywhere, eat better and exercise more, and... well, do more. ^_^ So just make a difference yourself, and I'm sure it will do some good.
