-->Ichigo receives training(+Hollow inside of him), Ukitake has a Zanpaktou
The above provides some basic stuff, essential to the plot later on. Ishida being a Quincy provides a human rival for Ichigo. The Quincy link is also made later on with Ishida's estranged father, who was especially avoided throughout the first arc, yet holds a key to the arc after SS. The Quincies all being exterminated by Shinigami provide a motive and a concept of Mayuri. Hollow power and the Arrancar are main story elements after SS.
->Soul Society:
-->Side characters beat side Captains (Quincy vs. Evil Shinigami "Doctor")
-->Ichigo fights Captain (Zaraki) that he can beat, on pure strength
-->Aizen dies (main key to after SS arc)
-->Information about Ukitake and Yoruichi, them being ex-Shinigami
-->Ichigo gets training from Yoruichi (Bankai)
-->Ichigo fights that he can beat, with new skill (Bankai+Hollow)
-->Aizen, Gin and Tousen leave SS, with their Hollow friends
Several things; Ishida loses his powers in a battle against the Shinigami, mostly responsible for the extermination of the Quincy. Since Mayuri survives, his revenge isn't complete. More is revealed about Zangetsu and Ichigo's inner Hollow. Other characters, such as Ikkaku appear. Aizen mysteriously dies, for a reason clear at the end of SS. With his Bankai (and some help from his Hollow), Ichigo defeats Byakuya. It is explained why Byakuya is so strict to follow the rules. Aizen's motives are revealed, and it is shown that the return of Rukia to SS, which is the key for the entire SS arc, is actually part of Aizen's plan. Along the way, Inoue is getting more and more "jealous" of Rukia, which, IMO, will have a consequence soon.
->After SS:
-->Vizards and Arrancar appear.
-->Grand Fisher is defeated by the ex-Shinigami Kurosaki Isshin.
-->Ishida meets his dad, who will train him.
-->Several friends of Ichigo also start to develop supernatural abilities.
-->Stronger Arrancar appear. 2 early on, a whole bunch later.
-->Ichigo, after the Arrancar battle, seeks the Vizards for strength.
Well, here we are now. Hirako and Hiyori confront Ichigo. Grand Fisher is ironically taken care of by the husband of who he killed. Isshin shows himself to be a former Shinigami, which explains Ichigo's potential, and provides a Deus ex Machina. Also Ishida's father, who was shrouded in mist so far, provides the key for Ishida to regain his Quincy powers. Several Arrancar are introduced. Some side-characters play a decent role, and new ones are introduced. Inoue's "jealousy" of Rukia grows. After Grimjow is called back by Tousen, Ichigo wants to become stronger. The solution: The Vizards.
Everything nicely works out, I'd say.
