this is purely nitpicking and unimportant, but if you have to have captain level skills to control the size of your soul slayer, shouldn't zaraki's sword be huge.

You said to control the size of your sword you need captain level skills. Well thats what I understood from it.
He is a captain.

You know, I've always felt that the 'spirit strength is proportional to size of Zanpakuto' thing is one of the most confusing, and perhaps nonsensical areas of Bleach (In truth, it just seems like an excuse to give Ichigo a huge, cool-looking sword), but in this case there is a rational(-ish) explaination.
Just because Kanpachi does not know the name of his sword doesn't mean he can't control his spirit energy, if he couldn't he wouldn't be able to fight anywhere near as well as he does, nor would his sword be able to cut through Zangetsu.

Whilst we're on the subject of meaningless nit-picking on this subject... Shouldn't un-seated shinigami have tiny, letter-opener sized zanpakutos? And shouldn't, say 6th seat (powerful enough to have a fair bit of energy, but not anywhere near 'captin-skill' level of control) have annoyingly big ones?

He became a captian through his own fighting skills and the fact that he's a monster. he needs that eyepatch to supress his power, i don't think he could supress the power of his sword

He's just a born fighter, like Chad he's strong but he has intent to kill and loads of combat experience going for him.

His sword has no ackowledged soul imo, it isn't large or small becasue nothing has been sealed in it. That's why it's all chipped up because it doesn't heal completely do to it's lack of spirit power or whatever.

It can return from being shattered since any sword can be reforged but it doesn't return completely like Ichigo's, unscathed and all... just my thoughts no basis of fact.

No, he specifically said that he just used that eye-patch to supress his power, but only because he wants a disadvantage, therefore having a more challenging fight.

There's no suggestion that he can't control his power.

dont unseated officers use the unnamed zanpakutous? And maybe controlling the size of one's zanpakutou is a skill everyone learns to do in the shinigami academy, so therefore of course the captains would know how, and ichigo wouldn't, because he never went. Also explains why maybe the other seated officers have rather normal-seized zanpakutous as well. Remember Gin, you know, the guy with Shinsou who left with Aizen. He had a really short one, not nearly as long as anyone else's, so it was just to fit his fighting style. Or the length of the sword can change according to the fighter's personal fighting style. Maybe both? I have no idea.

Zaraki Kenpachi made his way pretty much straight into captain level in SS by defeating the former Captain of the 11th squad. Remember that there's three ways to be accepted as captain.

Also, Ichigo was told that his zanpakutou has a name by Urahara or someone, so he was aware of it. He could have very well turned out like kenpachi if her werent told this. Kenpachi is obviously aware that his zanpakutou must have a name, but he never cared...

kenpachi like all captains probably DOES know how to control his reiatsu... he is a goddamn captian

and NO his sword is not small that shit is obcenely long... its almost up to his elbow its so long ... look at it closely compared to ichigos sword... theyre almost the same length (actually Kens is longer but ichigos is thicker)... so yeah...

Does this imply that if Zaraki had ditched THIS sword before becoming a shinigami and obtained one 'through himself' (so to speak) once joining Gotei 13 it would look even bigger than Gindabou's axes?
