but then, how do you gain your own zanpakuto when u're already a shinigami(assuming you've been using another all these while)? we know ichigo got his first from rukia... the second when he transformed on his own...

    Take The quiz yourself![/url]

Your spiritual essence allows you to hear the zanpakuto's name and then having a very one of your own since you're the only one who knows its name and how to use it properly.
That doesn't explain where Ichigo's came from. You can't say that Ichigo's been using Rukia's zanpakutou the whole time either, we all know that she still has her own.

I say that it's linked somehow to their own soul, formed from within, like an extension of their spirit. Each and every zanpakutou's traits suits its owner down to their very core, as if they were made to be together. It can't be a coincidence.

If i remember correctly didn't isshin just say that captain level shinigami control the size of there swords. Surely that doesn't imply that other powerful shinigami (say seated officers)don't?

It just means a big zanpakuto isn´t an indicator of the wielders power.

We don´t know if seated shinigami are able to control it, doesn´t matter IMO.

The manga was really confusing about this whoel zanpakuto thing.

I sorta get the impression that the Zanpakuto is nothing but a medium for their spiritual powers. That's why most of the unseated officers have the same sort of zanpakuto. It's just a medium given to them when they join become a trainee and as their spiritual powers increase, their power takes on a manisfestation of something and they learn the name, blah blah blah. That's probably its minimum size Eventually, I guess the higher-level Shinigami can control how much spiritual energy they leak into their swords and therefore can control its size.

Ichigo's sword was that big because any smaller medium probably would have just exploded (he can't control his energy yet), so the zanpakuto itself changed in size in order to hold the spiritual energy.

Kenpachi's sword looks different from all the other's (lengthwise and crossguard wise). It's probably just another medium he picked up somewhere, since it doesn't look like the standard zanpakuto.

Maybe even though he doesn´t know his zanpakutos name, its still the true form of his zanpakuto, like he said.

I mostly agree with Ducttapeofdoom that the Zanpakuto is a probably just a medium for spiritual powers. The fact that Ichigo can't cut Kenpachi at first, along with what Uraharara says when he's training Ichigo shows that Zanpakutos don't cut because they're 'sharp', but because they're full of spirit energy, concentrating and multiplying it on the blade (or so I assume).

This would mean that Zanpakutos work a lot like swords to in the real world... (Looks round at blank stares, then at the tumbleweed blowing past).

Yes, I know that Zanpakutos are swords, but let me explain. If you hit someone with a punch the same strangth and speed as a sword blow without the sword it wouldn't hurt them very much, in-fact it'd hurt less than a normal punch as sword blows are slower. Being hit with a blade only hurts you because all the force of the blow is concentrated into a tinyarea on the edge of the blade. Same with Zanpakutos.
My guess is that they take the spiritual energy the person is putting into the attack and really concentrate it on the edge of the blade, so in any collision they are likley to come out with more energy and damage whatever they're cutting (remember what Kenpachi says when Ichigo can't cut him?).
On that note, Kenpachi's sword must be a zanpakuto, else how would he cut spirits and hollows?

Note to sword fetishists: Yeah, my explaination sucked, I'm not very good on that subject and I couldn't be bothered to write any more.

Well of course within the zanpakuto is reiatsu from its wielder, otherwise they wouldn´t be able to use shikai/bankai after all...

Ichigo wasn´t able to cut Kempachi at the beginning because Kempachis reiatsu is so strong, that its acts as a shild against people who have a weaker reiatsu radiation.

Thats why Ichigo had to focus his mind do concentrate his reiatsu ("I will cut you" etc.). Thats how I understood it.

No way. he's such a popular and good character, the author won't be able to resist making him stronger. He's the only captain that can get considerably stronger.
Can you wrestle a man with no arms? no, challenge him to boxing.
