What I think Kubo was trying to say was if the past was labeled as C1, Tsukishima could go into Orihime's past and change it to C2. Orihime now came from C2 instead of the main C1. So he keeps putting people into this C2 past while Ichigo is in the main timeline.
All of this seems like super huge bullshit on the time travel scale though. It still all seems like it might as well be memories. It probably sounded too much like Aizen so he changed the wording
It seems like he's altering the memories imprinted on the "soul." That would be the only way he could interact with or control the "past" of an object otherwise. Although Tsukishima kind of strikes me as Aizen 2.0
"So, by 'splitting' your memories and sliding myself into them, I'm altering your perception of reality. Sound familiar? Things not being what they seem? I'm sure it's giving you.....deja vu...suddenly I feel like butterfly wings are in style...." ~Tsukishima
I wouldn't be surprised if we have a Ichigo fighting himself from another reality, ie Sliders or the Multiverse from DC. The Ichigo we see now is from Japan Prime.

Besides he doesn't have a God complex so he is TOTALLY different from Aizen.
