Point taken, but I still say that making everything a sword is getting a little stale...I thought some of the innovations Kubo made in the past were cool, like Ganju's sand technique, or Byakuya's Senbonzakura...right now I'm just tired of regular sword-swinging and power blasts.

As I said, Kube might take the fullmetal Alchemist route with their powers once it comes to fight time.
shinigami are souls right? so they can use shinigami's powers against them?
Does anyone else think that the substitute shinigami badge has a soul that wants to empower the substitute shinigami? Seems logical, since it's been a fairly nothing item that's been given a lot more focus than before.
This would imply that they don't want Ichigo's power for themselves, assuming he's not the only one who could be empowered that way, so they need a shinigami for their unrevealed, dastardly(?) plan...
I imagine controlling living beings' souls would be harder, but it might be their super-strong-super-secret power up... might also fit in if they need to manipulate Ichigo's soul (in addition to the badge's?) to repower him.
