Like hell he can, Ichigo's bankai is an overrated crapformation. His attacks aren't as strong as they should be and he isn't nearly as fast as he should be either.
After the awesomeness Ichigo's bankai was portrayed as during the fight against Byakuya, I think I can count on one hand the number of times his bankai's speed was sufficient in combat.

When're you gonna update this spoiler BF? Not like it matters now with the release so close.
Don't forget why Ichigo, Renji and Hitsu's bankai aren't seen as "super powerful" because they have only recently attained it. Whilst the rest have had it for at least 100 years or more. In retrospect Ichigo and Renji has had theirs for at most a year, not even. Ichigo's bankai also must have more than just speed, he just hasn't (Kubo saving it when he needs a random power up) discovered it yet.

Ichigo and Renji achived Bankai at the sametime (really it was the same day) and yet Renji has showed about 3 moves already, to me speed is all he has from his Bankai. Which is really funny when you think about it, in Bankai his power is compressed into his Zanpaktou that has turned into a normal sized one to give him a speed boost, we then find out later from Isshin that once you reach captain level you can change the size of your Zanpaktou so that your not swinging a skyscraper size Zanpaktou around.
So basically Ichigo's Bankai is a move that every captain level shingami has, his Bankai was made even more usless by his own fathers statement LMFAO!!
Don't you see thought BF, by making Ichigo's bankai appear so useless, we will be wowed by the sudden realization that his bankai ISN'T just speed. In fact it hasn't even been fully released yet, maybe his REAL bankai is a double fisted rocket cannon that can split into many parts and control all elements.
Was it ever confirmed though that the reason his bankai is so "small" is because it compresses his power so he can go faster?
Yes by byakuya (read the next page as well).
Sure having increase speed as bankai was a cool idea... Look at Flash from marvel for instance... But the crappy story telling of kishi ensured that now ichigo has a completely useless bankai. Each new enemy is as fast or faster than his bankai...
I just hope that yammi gets wiped out, he is sooooo boring.
I've said it before, i'm sure I will again...
But speed, in Bleach, seems to be derived from the character's spiritual pressure. His bankai seems so slow now because everybody is stronger than him. The whole SS fight between Ichigo and pretty much everyone in SS can probably be discounted by the simle fact that their pride stipulated that they'd never see him as an equal, and so never fought all out.
Zaraki aside anyway.... but even then, if he'd used kendo, Ichigo wouldn't be around right now. >_>
IMO that's the single biggest problem with this manga. Kubo just won't stick to his own power levels. I mean, obviously as he pulled out more arcs, everyone was gonna get stronger, but arranging any kind of adder outside of what's printed in the databooks is such a ridiculously convoluted matter that I honestly don't think any two people would come out with the same ranking tree >_>
EDIT: As for isshin's comment, I can see where you're all coming from, but it really is more of a spiritual pressure control skill. Most of, if not all of the current captains have been through Soul Reaper Academy, right? All of them would have learned to control and maintain their own spiritual energy before they called their shikai, and brought out the proper form of both their sealed and shikai swords. You can theorise that this would allow the maintenance of a proper size and shape for good combat use.
On the other hand, Ichigo didn't know squat about anything. That's why Zangetsu turned out so big, and why Renji was mocking the size of it when they met. And it's also why it used to shatter so easily, because he couldn't maintain the Spirit Pressure in Zangetsu either, meaning anyone with a more controlled output would just outclass it.
