Yeah it wouldn't surprise me if he did have/get Bankai, i mean him saying that he zanpakutos adheres most to what the 3rd division is makes him fairly ideal and to take up the role of captain. Might bust it out against Gin? but yeah there ideas

If you remember that 11th division is the strongest division in SS.

And the reason why Ikkaku still in 3rd of 11th division instead of being a new captain that Renji vote him to be.

And Ikkaku use to be Renji's sword trainer.

If you can recall that ,you won't underestimating Ikkaku.

5th of 11th division may be better than VC of some division.

You must read it again the reason why that gay(I can't recall his name) still/choose in 5th of 11th division.

Its hard to explain but if they had never gotten BanKai and someone asked who needed it and deserved it, Renji and Ikkaku would top the list. It just makes the most sense which is why it doesn't bother me. Eh.

I think the statement that division 11 is the strongest division is more like a self-claimed statement.

Yeah, the battle is getting more and more heated up. With two losses for Aizen's team, I wonder what would Aizen do. He might just sit around while watching his team falling one by one, but then suddenly shows some of his super awesome techniques that we have never seen before.

Well it IS stated that they are an all out warrior's division within the shinigami, with yumichika even specifically stating that he'd be transferred for having a kido type Zanpaku-to, so while it may be an assumption, it would be fairly logical to assume that 11th division is physically the strongest of the divisions.

Perhaps you could even argue that they're bound to have high spirit pressure throughout it's seated officers too - What would make them weaker than relative positions in other companies is the fact that none of them would really try to be all rounded soul reapers, rather, they would focus on attacking capabilities alone. For that reason, it's arguable that several people within their seated officers are capable of bankai. Certainly you could assume that at the very least, Yachiru has one, and there's a statement from ikkaku about training yumichika as well as renji.

I dunno, maybe i'm being too simplistic, but I do believe that Kubo is making this happen rather logically, aside from byakuya's statement about how rare bankai is. But then, at the same time, it could be that many people are like ikkaku, to an extent, and hid it from the rest of soul society.

Who knows for sure? lol, for now i'm liking how some of the vice captains are beginning to branch the gap between vice, and captain :P I'm also enjoying the extra characterisation of them, if somewhat limited compared to other characters

Look at Renji for a sec, he's been working his whole life to become stronger and surpass Byakuya. He's unlike the other vice-captains, you don't really see them trying hard to get stronger do you? (Okay maybe they do try but Renji tries harder) He simply seems a bit more determined than the other VCs in my opinion.

Now onto Ikkaku... Come on. >_> If any seated officer would get bankai first (and didn't he have bankai before Renji?), it'd be Ikkaku. The guy loves fighting, a lot, and unlike Zaraki, Ikkaku wasn't all stingy about the whole not talking to your zanpakuto thing. The conversation would be something along the lines of...

Ikkaku: Yo, Hozukimaru!
Hozukimaru (half-asleep): Huh? Ya, what's up?
Ikkaku: Let's fight!
Hozukimaru: You wanna go?!
Ikkaku: Yeah I can kick your ass!
Hozukimaru: No way, I'd totally kick your ass!
*Ikkaku manifests Hozukimaru into the physical world and kicks its ass*

Now if Kubo gives bankai to one more person, I bet it's Izuru Kira.
