Great chapter. Seems all the to-be Vizards went out on this mission...

Looking back, Aizen said he was experimenting with and that "Hollow" that killed Kaien, to me he might have been trying to "recreate" whatever did the "Vaizard-fication" to the people there. That "Black-sword" might have something to do with.
But now we know where the hell Tensai came from.. some very high up place..

Hogyouku is created > Urahara hides it > aizen finds it > aizen tell us it to break free from the shinigami cap > Aizen uses to create arrancars.
Now, in the past we see a Hollow/Shinigami hybrid
So its maybe a earlier form of the Hogyoku or earlier experiments, or a "experiment" gone bad or just someone's freakish bankai, that has the "power to hollowish shinigamis"
Not saying that Kaien was involved in any form at this time, BUT Aizen might be, Azien said he was the one responsible for the hollow that took over Kaien body, so if you take its a bad experiment by -100years that its very probable that was destroyed by then, and Aizen at -50years managed to create that hollow with the data he collected at that time, but wasn't really sucessfull..

I just said that because its similar in aspect, that hollow fused himself into Kaien's body, similar to what happened to Ichigo.
The only thing I am assuming is: Aizen motives to create that hollow that killed* Kaien was to try to recreate the "Vaizardification" process. (That I think its fairly obivious)
But all wraps with the question, if the Hogyoku isn't necessary to create a vaizard, what its purpose?
the key!! the key!! everything has to do with the key!! vizards are just foot soldiers!! like ants!! the key!! u stab the king with the key!! after that, if the queen is lonely, there's always the key. ummm...yeah....
I just think every single one of them will be transformed into hollow so Urahara Kisuke will create the Hogyouku in the attempt to remove part of their hollow form. And the result is vaizard.

I'm calling that Urahara invented the Hogyoku to cure those who later became the Vaizards. Hence why they are transformed and why Aizen acted like he knew of the Hogyoku from reading about it, not seeing it in person.
