Meh, Byakuya's revelation wasn't very impressive. Gin's was nice, but the Mayuri/Urahara convo at the beginning was the best.

I didn't take the translation to imply Byakuya liking Yoruichi. Yoruichi is just playful with him, and Byakuya is proud and hot-headed.

weird that urahara is offering mayuri vice-captaincy considering hiyori is like.... standing right beside him. does he mean to demote hiyori to 3rd seat or something ? anyway, nice flashback moments

Well, it's like Yoruichi and her different branches I imagine. He's only the second-in-command while he's in there; still, I do wonder if he became the third seat or discovered his Bankai before Urahara left.

I think this arc is worth it simply to dash some of the assumptions I made. I assumed that positions like head of the 2nd Division and head of the special forces or whatever was an ex officio thing like Urahara's jobs as head of technology and developement and captain of the 12th.

Actually, Urahara is giving Mayuri the position of Vice-president of the Research and Development department. Of course that it´s implied that Mayuri will return to a full fledged Death God in his divison but that´s not the main subject of what they´re discussing in this moment.

And to ensure Mayuri´s acceptance of his proposal, he "hinted" at his own misfortune and basically said that Mayuri would eventually gain full authority over the R&D department.

Urahara certainly as some kind of plan to execute in the middle of all this and it most likely involves the origin of the Vizards, especially since Hiyori is his VC. it´s this kind of situations that makes me think that Urahara will become an antagonist in this series sooner or later. He seems as deceptive and calculative as Aizen in this flashback.

The rest of the chapter was also filled with goodness, this arch has been nothing but gold so far.

    Vice-Captain : Hiyori

Vice-President of the Research and Development Institute : Mayuri

    No, not the same.

In this chapter, Urahara invites Mayuri to kill him and steal his job.

What really bugs me though is how Gin (and probably Aizen) are going to explain the murder of the previous third seat to Shinji. Or does Shinji just not care?

    Uryuu freaky, pale and geeky,
    how do your powers grow?

Hot-headed teen Byakuya was kind of silly, but the scene itself helped connect the flashback more with the present as we see Yoruichi likes to molest teenage boys in both.

    Gin's such a badass. Srsly.

Am I the only one that noticed just how much younger Byakuya is in this time frame? He had one hell of a growth spurt. Hope we see Rukia's sister soon.

Same goes for Gin. Apparently a spirit in Soul Society reaches adulthood in more or less 200 years but remain as an "middle aged" adult for more than a 1000 years. Who knows how old Yama is.

They live as hell but grow up really fast in the first hundred years.
