The Black Mask
Alright, I originaly posted this thought in the chapter 280 discussion thread, but I figured that this might be better for disscussion.
Throughout Bleach, Ichigo's mask has gone through several changes. Originaly it had 2 stripes, then 3, and so on, untill it is now almost half black. My original theroy on this is that the stripes (and eventual half mask mark) are signs of how Ichigo is able to handle his Hollow. The black being the "corruption" that Ichigo is famos for in the SS with his Ban-ki and such (the reason he gains the power of something is to use it against that thing). My resoning is that no Hollow that we have seen actualy had markings on it besides his (including Vizards and Arrancar) and that this is one of his major power sources, so it isn't just a "refinement" of the art like some think.
I've now came up with another idea: what if the black part is actually rotting away? The next step in both Arrencar and Vizzard evolution? Remember, Vizzards still have the compleate mask, so what happens if they loose half of it?
Anyways, what are your thoughts and theroys on this? I would love to know!
Hmmm... well I can't see properly in the last frame of 359, but the blackness is definitely getting more concentrated than it was on the original mask that appeared on Ichigo.
But shouldn't he be more in control of the hollow as time goes by and he uses the mask? It could just be an indicator of the hollow's strength. Like... after losing to Ulquiorra, it's 50-50. Shinji's mask is all white which would indicate that he has full control over his hollow? Maybe Ichigo is just slowly losing control as he loses more fights.
As you know, hollows/arrancar are associated with white, shinigami, the black threads.
It could might as well be saying, "shinigami growing on hollow", or a true union.
The Vaizards have white masks which could mean their hollow sides are still "themselves" still being the horse for their king but never letting their king grow into them.
All fancy speculation though. Imaginations run wild when we don't see more action.
True, but still, I know that the mask has to symbolize something. I like the idea that it is also the "incorpreation" of Ichigo into his hollow, but somehow I doubt it because of the Arrencarr. Also on this note, Ichigo might actually be an Arrencar and not a vizzard. He did turn into a hollow first. But then again, who knows.
But he already had his own shinigami powers.
can't be an arrancar. Arrancar are "hollows who remove their masks to gain shinigami powers". The first thing that ichigo ever became was a shinigami, taking rukia's powers. However, ichigo seems to be unique, since his "regaining" process isn't known to have occured in any other individual, where he came back with a hollow mask and shinigami clothing.
So, I'd suspect he's something new, which would be very typical of a main character. Neither fitting in as an arrancar, nor a vizard
Im not going to comment on that, because we all have been down this road before. I suggest you go re-read the manga again and if even then u still cant understand it, Pray!!!!

like i said before,in all probability,if the amount of time ichigo can use his mask is improving, the stripes on the mask will also increase.
if the mask still falls apart after 11secs or so,then kt just wants to change his art.
We've never seen a mask with any type of design on it at all...be arrancar, vizard or plain hollow. The stripes on icigoes mask must count for something,
my 2 cents
