    Default The Substitute Shinigami

i was wondering. to be a shinigami, you have to be dead. however, since Isshin is alive and well, he must've been a SUBSTITUTE shinigami like Ichigo is right now...

and the substitute "badge" with the skull sign on it that was handed to Ichigo by Ukitake must have been Isshin's long time ago...

    that's my theory..

I don't really know because in the manga, it says that Isshin as strong as a captain, so that must mean he has a bankai. So he must have been living a long time to achieve bankai because the only people to achieve it quickly were Urahara and Ichigo. And if that skull badge thing was Isshin's before, how would Isshin get out of his body. If Isshin is a substitute, that means he has his own skull badge thing.

well do we truly know he's alive?
couldn't the body he currently has just be a konpaku (one of the artificial bodies like Rukia had...i think thats how you spell it) also supplied by Urahara since they do know each other?
on that same point, if it were the case Urahara himself would either have to have the same kind of body or also still be alive and a substitute shinigami...which couldnt be the case cos he was the captain of the 12th division wasn't he?

    Couple of problems with that.

Isshin knew Urahara, who happened to suggest that Isshin may have been weakened by something that he had done (perhaps the use of a gigai that can hide spirit pressure?)

And the substitute badge is bs, the shinigami that Ichigo met (and showed the badge) didn't know what it was at all. The most likely use for that would be to track Ichigo's movements.

And all shinigami has to die first, even Ichigo did that, it's just that he kept his body safe in a controlled environment and returns to it whenever he's not performing his duties as a shinigami. The chances of someone doing that for Isshin is slim (why go to all that trouble when you might just be turning a normal human into a hollow?)

I hope they explain both of Ichi's parents not just his father. Although I'd like to know how he had kids if he's in a gigi.

Maybe it is Fully Functioning? I mean Uruhara has created some crazy stuff.

Okay, okay. Here's my theory: Isshin had kids BEFORE he died, then he became a Shinigami, decided he didn't want to be one anymore, left and went to Uruhara for a Gigai.

That theory doesn't sound very plausible... I dunno why, but it just doesn't to me.

My own theory:: Isshin was the former captain of the Eleventh Division. He fought Zaraki for the captain's seat, lost, got beaten to near death, and only looked like he died. Urahara, still the 12th captain (or not, it works either way), comes in and helps him out by bringing him to the human world where, like Ichigo and Rukia, he has to regenerate his powers.

Substitute shinigami means that you got your powers unofficially, like how Ichigo "stole" Rukia's against Fishbone, whereas Isshin had, I think, a tattered captain's robe on him when he raped the Grand Fisher.

Firstly, The time frame wouldnt work for isshin having kids before he died and became a shinigami since rukia would have noticed him by then, also would mean he hadn't been a captain for very long.
you have a point. since rukia didn't kno yoruichi (just heard of her), urahara, and isshin being captains, that meant yoruichi, urahara, and isshin were captains and shinigami long before rukia became a shinigami or maybe even before that.for urahara and yoruichi, it was 100 years ago. isshin must've been...some time ago so he probably didn't have kids before he died.

Right true, Isshin surely been a shinigami long time ago, and when Urahara and Yoruichi decide to forfit Soul Society, maybe that's when Isshin comes to world, or maybe after that.

Don't know, but one thing is for sure, this can't have happened more than 32 years ago or less, why? Remember that Isshin knows Uryu's father, actually, they know each other, Isshin, Urahara, Yoruichi and Uryu's father
