Am I the only one confused about how death works?
I've been wondering for quite some time now. People die. They go to soul society. What happens when they die there? Where do they go? Also, people are born in Sould Society. Rukia was. How does that work? I love Tite...but I think he's not letting people die because he honestly doesn't know what to do with them afterwards. Has this bothered anyone else?
I've been pondering that as well.KT sure hasn't been too talkative about that,so I was wondering if he has a good reason to do that?
Like there might be a plot twist in the future involving something like this:
Maybe the souls that "die" in SS are reincarnated in the living world? That way Ichigo might be Kaien revisited and when they find out about it everyone'll go "OMG!Didn't see that one coming!!"
Then again it might not...maybe he's just lazy in coming up with those technical thingies
Nietzsche is dead
I think Ichigo being kaien was already discussed somewhere, with most people generally agreesing that, that theory is incorrect. But its true that there are alot of questions yet to be ansered about how death works. I think one of the more confusing parts besides death in SS is. A restless spirit becomes a ghost, becomes a hollow if nothing is done, and hollows can be sent to SS by shinigamis, which means hollows are not evil per se, but they just lose their rational and are by all means animals. Except some hollows (Grand Ficher) who seems to possess more intellect then simply kill kill kill. However if you die and were a bad person you go to hell, which hasn't been discussed at all except for Rukia sending one soul to hell earlier on i think. I wonder if you cannot die by natual causes in soul society.
Well... since ichigos dad IS a shinigami then ichigo could be related to kaien but back on the death topic i think people die in the real world and after that if they "die" there soul is destroyed or something like that
Nope...I think mysteryguy12 is right, I think I remember something about this whole mess...Do you remember when they were explaining the difference between the Shinigami and Quincy? They might have said that souls that die in SS get born back in our world, in order to preserve the balance of the world...However, it seems that in both worlds other -new- people are born, so it's not only about reincarnation...But then again KT hasn't really explained anything extensively...He probably doesn't really care about that sorta in a way "just accept anything I give you and concentrate on the fights, don't go into technical details..."
In response to dropthesky about dying of natural causes...that's a good point because I know that in the whole Renji Rukia past thing, they're like fighting over water...and if you have spiritual power, you need food or you die. Like how Matsumoto collapsed and Gin saved her in a flashback/possible dream thing. So that's interesting. I suppose it's totally possible. But what about old age?
As for the keeping balance with souls, that just throws a whole new loop into this. But i was thinking...if Menos Grande are made up of tons and tons of hollows all mashed together...would it even be wise to actually kill one of them? I mean wouldn't that risk altering the balance somewhat?
Who else wants to see what Hell is like?
Oh, and I agree that it doesnt actually make a difference because everything else is so awesome, but its still interesting to think about.
They we're talking about killing Hollows, not beings that reside in SS. Remember hollow souls neither reside in SS, earth or hell. So when i shinigami kills it it goes to SS, when a Quincy kills it... it ceases to exist or something. Which kinda sucks. In any case there hasn't been any concrete answers, only people working out the equations that must be true if in fact the [universe (i guess)] will be destroyed if a rudimentary balance is not preserved. Those equations being that 1. If a souls body dies it has to go somewhere, unless a Quincy kills it. I think this has to be true because if shinigmamis killed shinigamis and their soul doesn't go somwhere ie: Earth/Hell.Heuco Mundo (wherever). And maintaining a balance of souls is so frigging important ie: both SS and Earth exploding. Then a shinigami would NEVER kill another one. However to become captain one of the ways of doing so is killing the previous one. Obviously this wouldn't be the case if killing a shinigami is destroying its soul, and thus endangering the universe. IF we accept that as a fact (many of you won't) Then we can agree that when shinigamis die they do go somewhere. I don't think its earth. I hope its hell, cause that would invoke some cool plot twists later on. Ie: (Aizen dies, goes to hell, and starts causing trouble there^^) However it could just be the KT never bothered to worry about technicalities like this. And yes, i really hope after Aizen there will be an arc where they have to go to hell, that would be badass.

when a shinigami kills a hollow it purifies the soul, thats why it goes to SS, but when the soul is so evil it goes to hell, which is probably a place where nothing happens and souls are just floating around. and i think that when a soul dies in SS it goes to the real world in someway, a powerful soul may be split in to many souls, or in the case of ichigo a powerful soul either went to him or multiple souls went to him to make him more powerful. quincys just destroy the soul rather than purify it making the balance of souls unequal which is why the quincys thinned out and there are only a couple left
They're souls probably get sent back to Earth with no memory of the past life.
