    Default College blocking IRC/BitTorrent ports...

    Hey guys.
At my college, the tech guys decided that to block piracy, they would block the ports to IRC connections and BitTorrents (I don't think I worded that correctly.) To be honest, I don't know what the hell that means, but a friend of mine said that this was the most likely reason.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get around this?

I'm afraid not. Not unless you know the tech guys behind it. I guess you're stuck with direct downloads.

Basically, IRC and Bittorent use a certain gateway which is called a port. If the gateway is blocked then you can't use IRC or Bittorent at all.

try using different ports at your end
and if all else fails.. try using a proxy server

Yeah sometimes you can switch to alternate ports. Just change your TCP Listen port in the client.
Dear cousin choppitychop89, you were a good relative, though I hardly knew ye.

    ...TCP?
    What's a TCP Listen port?
Do you mean pick a different port to log in to (like on the main log in window on mIRC)?

what bt client are you using?

and with irc, not much you can do.. hopefully they didn't block outgoing on that port and only incomming (to prevent irc servers). The only way to get around an outgoing block is to use a proxy server.

For torrent file I use BitTornado I believe. For IRC, I usually used mIRC. I don't know how they block things, like which ports are blocked. My vacation ends in a week and I might be able to get more info then.
And I know there has to be some way of getting around at least the torrent problem because a friend of mine is able to recieve files. He has never had a problem though, and doesn't know why he can, and the rest of us can't.
