Thread: Torrent Boxes...

I found this addie about a torrent-box :

Sorry, it's in german. But I guess some things are understandible. It features overnight dl when you comp. is shut down; has it's own firewall and cpu and blabla...

I'm thinkin' about buyin' some, but I wanna find out some experience of other users and if other boxes are avaible too.

Never heard of them. Quite an interesting little concept.

Thing with that is... is it actually capable of keeping up, and at decent speeds. My german basically extends to the word 'nein'... sooo just picking out what I can read...

An ARM9 processor I believe should be ok. A Nintendo DS runs ARM9, I think. :S
24 downloads, with 100 peers a piece (I think that's what it says) probably won't get you very far, but it might work.

It's really only worth it if you have issues where you want to save on power. Thing is, having talked to Martyr (who can actually read German, unlike me), it appears the thing doesn't have a HD... so you need to connect it to a computer, or a external HD anyway. If you connect it via network, then it's either needs a computer, or a very expensive network based external hard disk enclosure. Running an external HD... haven't you just lost your power gain anyway? :S

We (I believe I can speak for Mart) say nein. Not worth it. If you don't want to leave your big desktop on, then spend the 100$usd you would spend on that box and get an old PIII/P4 computer with a smaller power supply built that you can run a small, streamlined Linux distribution on that can download your torrents. I'm sure that's basically what that little box is... Linux compiled to ARM9 and a small linux torrent client. You can build a system that doesn't use a ton of power, and that has it's own hard disk and networks to your PC if you got the time to learn how... and probably a lot cheaper than that. A computer doesn't need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to run once it's setup, after all.

^^Yea, thanks. I didn't come so far to think about the connections to run that baby (just usb-connect won't do it...).
I guess it says it doesn't need HD...just a usb-stick on that's all. But since some torrents use up a lot of time, I thought it would be better running them over-night, to save costs and energy.

Another option is to go in with some friends and get a monthly service of a "seed box". This gives you a big pipe for U/L + D/L, then you just pull stuff off via FTP. If you can find a group of friends that can agree on what to D/L, it can be a good deal.
