RIAA detection methods

I wasn't sure which forum this should go on, but I guess it's most appropriate that it go here.

As I'm sure most of you are aware, the RIAA is going on a spree with colleges and universities for copyright infringement.

I'm a little curious how the detection process works. Everywhere I've looked has just talked about "p2p software" as a general thing.

Personally, if was ever going to dl music, BT would be my client of choice.
My school network is complying with the RIAA.
My wireless internet requires a login.
How do you think my school network logs traffic? Does it log certain types of traffic differently? (IRC vrs. LimeWire vrs. BT vrs. HTTP, etc)

So... let me know. And read into what I'm saying here.

Well should you be doing something bad, which your not of course, all traffic of the college is going out one big badass line through one big badass server. Also, you log in. So what's this mean?

Weeeeeelllllllllll... way I understand it, you get an IP address, you log into the network, and then your good to go. So now there is a record of your account active on XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX IP at XX:XX time till XX:XX time. So yeah... it's your ass. This is why you always log off. XD

As far as detection, go ahead and have a look see on google about packet sniffers. It's not much different (if at all) on the server that all the traffic is going in and out of. In fact, there's probably a script running that whenever it detects a packet with X identifier, it sends up a red flag. I'm not too good with them myself, but it's possible for an experienced network admin to distinguish what packet was sent by what program. I know my college gets pissed if they detect Aries traffic.

As far as BT programs go, there's a lot of ligit uses for that. Every major linux distribution uses it. You can't really fuck everyone over for just the use of it. So, that's mostly the RIAA/MPAA jumping on the torrents themselves, getting your IP address, Reverse DNSing it, and then going to your college, pointing, and screaming "WAAAAAAAAAAA!!! T-T". That's why BT clients have encryption, IP block lists, and annominity options built in... it's no one's god damn business what your doing.

on a bright note, i saw somewhere that the RIAA never won a trial, is that right ?
The article said that the accused almost always agreed to pay the RIAA directly (through a "friendly" agreement (mafia technique)), and that those who resisted always won (there are no more than a few, and almost all are women (i guess they have more guts than men :p))

lol, no, the RIAA does often win the lawsuits, but rather, often decides not to pursue some of them in court. People have gotten off for all kinds of things.
The women you're talking about have done things like, "I leave my computer on, my son's and daughter's friends use the computer, it wasn't us," and often get away with it.
At college, it's rather different. Also, most people agree to settle because they clearly ARE in the wrong about it.
Interesting about reverse DNSing. I guess that would make sense.

hahaha, don't worry. I've been careful to avoid the labels the RIAA represent. I both refuse to buy their cds or pirate them.
