It can depend on what kind of router you have. For example I have Sagem Livebox F@st and I can open the ports by getting into settings.
Then I go to "Lan servers" and I write the following (this is an example)
Name : BitComet (it's not important how will you name it - for each program you need to do something like this)
Security : Open
Protocol : TCP (or UDP - depends on program)
Port : (number which you can find in settings of the program you want to open ports for)
...but some other's are far more difficult.
