I'll be the one to bother and say it.
This is just my interpretation, but it comes down to three things: He had just killed someone's parent, he was the one who took everything from an innocent person, and most importantly, he may have looked down at that little girl with nowhere to go, and saw himself.
For anything more than that, I suggest you take Cooler's advice.
I think you hit the nail right on the head there. When you think of the amount of pain and anguish Guts had to go through because of Griffith killing off the only thing he could really call his family, think of how he felt when he realised he'd just done the same thing to somebody else.
