if i remember correctly, the baby was in a way used to form griffiths physical body, so he can be reborn and move on with his plan.

The kid's still around, he got reborn along with Griffith. He shows up as the lost boy they found right before they get attacked by the mangattors after he gets the Berserk Armor. He may also have affected Griffith as seen in the Zod fight after Griffith's rebirth at the grave yard.
