I think that in some ways it's a giant gimmick. It gives this place a fanbase. From there the forum built a dedicated group of regulars. From those regulars several people became "helper" types who answer questions / provide info in other forums to help the new guys. Take martyr's big manga thread, or the chapter per volume thread he contributes too. Or me in the BT/IRC forum and my nick registration guide.
So sure, the means to creating a community was silly, but hell, it still caught on. So I don't care so much about tazmo now as I do about just contributing. Jesus just look at the Download request forum. I've never seen a forum so heavily based on members helping each other out.
