There's some element of mutual benefit there: Sites prosper from illegal downloads, but in turn, they stir up publicity for the series, thus increasing the series's sales (in both anime and manga form; especially in manga, which gains more of its sales from hardcore fans) when it is released by dubbing/translating companies.
I'm not here much, but if you have anything to say to me about Tazmo, you're either (a) fanatical, or (b) wrong. If not, we can be friends. Except you, Martyr. We can never be friends.

plus they'd make tons of cash from selling merchandise. IT's not illegal perse. Fansubs live in a law gray zone. However, it is illegal for Naruto to be distributed since it's been licensed. Basically if no one licences something to be distributed in one area, no one cares but when it is licensed and released they start worrying about profits and stuff. When Naruto gets released on toonami, watch narutofan.com go down.

Icor, technically its still illegal whether its been licensed or not. You have to remember that fansubs and scanlations break copyright laws. Most companies will turn a blind eye though since fansubs help produce western sales. However there are incidents where companies will ask that their stuff not be subbed/scanned. Media Factory being the latest. After the Mainax fiasco where the ova was released as a fansub a week before it was actualy released for sale, Media Factory stepped up and threatened leagle action to any and all; including AnimeSuki, Scarywater Traker, and several fansubing groups who were subbing the mainax ova.

As a result AnimeSuki and Scarywater no longer list anything by Media Factory.

The moral of the story here is, enjoy your anime and manga, but remember it is ilegal, plain and simple (but hey, so's drinking underage and how many of us actually listened to that :P)

I use anime/scanlations as a guide for purchases, if i liked a show/manga i'll go out and buy it when its finally released locally, which can sometimes be 5 years after it was licensed.

As for hosting anime and manga, the hosting isnt the problem, its the bandwidth you need. Finding a host is simple, a quick google search gave a list of over 500 links. The problem comes from having enough bandwidth to make the hosting viable. For a decent manga collection (like whats here) you going to need around 1.5-2Tb a month, minimum. And a hell of a lot more for anime. Hell i use an anime hosting site and i alone dled around 300GB last month alone.

If your going to do it, get your own servers, either go with a managed hosting plan, or buy a server.
