I can't add much to the whole Usenet situation since I never used it. For a great deal of time though I did consider uploading files to mediafire/rapidshare/uploaded.to/rapidgator and many others, creating a script to do it, it really came back to a return on my investment, which is time. I've spent a great deal of time talking with webmasters in the Anime/Manga community, and so many are used to free stuff, the idea of sending a donation of any kind is just too much it seems for most people. I could not even get people to send me even a small gift card for my trouble, which can be picked up at any store, to be fair I did get one or two over a 2-3 month period. One thing though I've heard from other webmasters is they are all looking to make their exit. I know many who are switching over to celebrity blogs, porn sites, proxy/flash networks, custom Facebook games, Twitter Apps, social media ranking apps, etc. A shift is taking place and that might be good in some ways since the community will be a lot smaller, but ST is going to be closed either way.
One thing I can comment on is that it seems like Piracy of all kinds is under attack. Over the past few months though I've noticed a lot of Manga/Anime sites getting hit hard, some individuals I know have even lost their domain names. I've also noticed a lot of the games/software applications I find have code embedded in them, and I am not sure who is doing it exactly I always assume its the people posting it, to the point where I tend to just pay for the software to know my machine is not going to be hacked and my bank info stolen, although you could get away with installing VMWare/Virtualbox and setting up a VM, with software depending on remote connections, my biggest fear is people being sued since the software can be traced back to specific people. It's a changing world for sure though.
