I was a member at another site that had a problem just like yours, namely funding. The bottom line there was that you will always have more people who want everything free while paying for/ contributing nothing. The other site that had high traffic, but low donations. After much debate behind the scenes a few things happened. One, the original owner sold the site to a long time member because he was sick of the funding issue. Two, the site was linked to a sex toy site, as decided he new owner . Three, ads were inserted at regular intervals within the forum thread, as well as on all of the main pages. Those measures saved the site. Selling the site is not a necessity, but what happened at the other site was only a result of an open mind. The old owner didn't want to be linked to a sex toy shop, nor did he want ads, but without both the site would have been closed.
I never put ads on the forum but I did everywhere else. The issue was that we were not getting any conversions and so at most we were only making $30/m or so and because that was so little, I just decided to remove the ads. I guess it's too bad ST had to close but it's been a long time coming, now that I'm getting older I have to make real money, not just a few dollars extra each month. Still though I am considering opening again, but perhaps this time people would be forced to pay to view in some manner. I'm sorry I had to take the Manga down before you had the chance to be a long term member, but thank you for returning after almost a year and sharing your comments.

I just saw this and it hit me, if we did this how would this place be any different than Tazmo... I mean obviously I'd hope you'd reinvest every penny back into the site instead of buying porn (who buys porn anyway, even back then? I never understood) or whatever else Tazmo did. But I digress, the crux is if we're charging people for something thats being given away for free (illegally albeit) aren't we being antithetical to the entire point of this website in the first place?

I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

No, because this money goes to the upkeep of the server, not for profit making. As far as Kane breaks even, it's okay. I mean, you can't really expect a person to pay the expenses from his or her pocket for eternity. So it wouldn't be the same. And if the many people who have used this site had donated just a few cents, he could have covered the expenses with no problem.

The only options with no costs involved would be hosting sites or IRC (I think).

You have a point and that is why I avoided it. The reason I was thinking about it so long ago was because of all the time I invested. I'm no longer a teenager so anything I do has to make a real return, breaking even is no longer a possibility in any venture, and certainly not running a site that loses money measured by my investment in time. To be honest, any money I did make would go to pay off student loans, right now it's my #1 concern to find another job that pays more money so I can pay them down. Restarting the site was really just an idea and I never went through with it.

It is hard to charge people for stuff that is free, and it's dishonest, the most one could say is that they are providing a service, having everything on one place, a huge collection of manga and associated information, etc. I knew that the community was against it, so I did not go through with things.

I hate to admit it but I'm still considering it, if I knew it would bring in enough money. The only real issue is I deleted all our manga, 500GB+, so it would be hard/impossible to start over without a huge investment in time.

If I did go through with it, the key would be to profit $500/m or so in time so that I could use the money to pay for the server + pay bills honestly. Not young enough anymore to do everything for free, need to pay bills, save for a home, new car, find a new job and all that kind of stuff. I mean I figure accepting BTC of just $1/m from a ton of people would really help, but not sure if people would go through with it, or what they would think if I were to go the Tazmo route.

Well, to be honest, I personally wouldn't do a thing like this for the money. Or at least not as a main source of income, since it's pretty risky. As a side project it's okay, but as you said, you need to make money, so I think it was the right decision to take the downloads down.

You are right it's risky. The only way to really avoid the risk would be to accept payment in Bitcoin/LiteCoin/DogeCoin, etc. I no longer have time for side projects, and I hate to say that. That way I would not have to worry about having my payments taken from me. It's too bad that the Manga community is getting shutdown and hit with all these DMCA's. There really does need to be a Netflix of Manga since there really is not one. Not sure how profitable it would be. Thank you though everyone for coming and posting and providing me with feedback.

^ Well, that's the least we can do after all this time. It's a pity we couldn't do more to help you out, but that's history now...

And yeah, a Manga-netflix type of website would be something. The first step was probably made by crunchyroll, so further development will probably depend on its success. And we should not forget that even Netflix and Online Shonen Jump are only available for North America (or the U.S.). Would be cool to see it spread over the whole world...

I was thinking more about a Netflix style site and it makes me wonder if it would be much of a success. I mean I can see people paying for videos and music, but a manga chapter/volume or a subscription model of some kind, I can't see young people who are mostly Manga readers doing that. I might be wrong so it will be interesting to see how CrunchyRoll does.

I do think that's the future, since printed media tend to have ever decreasing sales. And if it's a decent price, people might want to spend some money to get several series (like, how many there are in Jump) legally and to always have access to them. But Viz is pretty much the forerunner there, with JumpAlpha. Looks like it doesn't run half bad, since they're expanding to India, IIRC.

Kevin, have you thought about hosting contents offsite using something like mega.co.nz?
