Low activity? Shitsucks. Oh well.
As for Umineko, so far I'm liking it much more than I did Higurashi. Higurashi set up a very nice mystery at the beginning and then turned into LOL MAGIC AND CRAZY PEOPLE DID IT ALL, which sucked. Umineko's going sort of the opposite direction, and looks to be much more interesting.
Also, while I haven't read the VN and therefore have no clue whether this theory has already been addressed and debunked, my primary guess as to how to explain the murders is as follows:
Beatrice is a real human who lives in the woods of the island. She describes herself as an "alchemist", which is close to but not actually the truth. Beatrice is actually a skilled toxicologist and hypnotist, with all of the magical effects being created by the use of hypnotism enhanced by hallucinogenic drugs.
I believe this to be the case because, during the first arc, all the visible magical effects (e.g. golden butterflies) fell into two categories: those which effected only willing believers in the witch, who would be susceptible to normal hypnotism, and those which kicked in following the furnace scene. When Beatrice burned Kin's body, she did so because the scent of the burning flesh would overpower the scent of the hallucinogens that she was spreading through the air. This is also why she was so intent on forcing people to believe a witch was behind the murders, and why Battler is such a problem for her: non-supernatural hypnotism, even in its exaggerated fictional form, requires a level of willingness to go along with the suggestions. Starting with the true believers (Maria, Shannon, Kanon), she was able to swiftly implanting the idea that a witch was doing the killings in the others, which made them willing to go along with her suggestions as well. Battler's disbelief is so strong that he was never able to see even the butterflies until the end, when he was thoroughly drugged.
The locked room murder of Eva and her husband, which is the main sticking point of this theory, could also be easily accomplished through a combination of hypnotism (and possibly poison). The husband had a very shallow head injury that would have killed him slowly if at all, and he was therefore hypnotized into relocking the room behind Beatrice and then going to the bath.
