Honestly, why does that matter at all? They were just another team that they needed to beat which would help them out with experience since they had a unique way of challenging from other AT teams. Those guys being evil and doing it for profit isn't really big, and O!G does this all the time in his mangas. I'm sure you know about his previous works before he did both AG and TT, those were way worse then these guys being evil...

It provides a discussion point. Something to pass the time until the next release.

Though this is pretty critical to the story. At this point you have the main story is at a crossroads. Oh! Great could've easily written the fact that the octuplets weren't greedy bastards and have them be casualties of greater circumstances. Give the manga a little bit more of an edge because the main characters will do anything for their goal of conquering the tower. Instead of they were just helping the poor old folks on the boat without anyone knowing except for Ikki.

This point in the manga is a vital turning point for the whole story. At least up to the scanlated chapters.

Ikki beat the Rez-boa-dogs and trampled on their dreams, and they were alright >_>

Seriously though, I think the whole point of Ikki's path is finding a way to conquer the Trophaeum without crushing other people, because ascending that way makes him no better than the forces he's fighting to unseat. He got dangerously close to doing that when he fought with Ringo, and that fight brought him to the realization that he had to change something in order to continue.

Well with the Ren-Boa-dogs it was too early in the story and at that point Ikki didn't know the significance of the emblem

@metrobluejay- Meh, I found this battle to be less important as it was informant for reasons abaile stated. If anything I'm more interested in the reason why Genesis started going after SF, I thought that was more important than adding the fact that Octuplets were bad guys. Also, I wouldn't say that there were casualties, more like betrayals since they were stealing from them. If it didn't seem like that it would have somewhat contradicted with Ikki's character, which was predicable but at that point it fit well, unlike the whole Ringo and Ikki fight IMO.
