And no, doing tricks to level up is not competetive enough, what is needed is a replacement for monster battles in MMOs). The other problem is a technical problem, having lots of PCs (player characters) performing complex animations on the same screen in the same persistent enviroment will kill the frame rate.

EDIT: Actually for a solution to the first problem would be to have players perform unranked 1 on 1 AT battles to level up, of course this creates a new problem, if there aren't many players on or a player gets too far ahead in level, they are gonna run out of chalenges. Also the game will only apeal to PvP players.
instead of monster fights being the way to level up outside the battles, couldnt you have kind of 'pratice' runs e.g. making it to a certain location in a certain amount of time or stringing together a certain number of combos, cause then you would have a way to gain exp and it would be a 'realistic' way of improving your character, as ringo and ikki and co got better through practise as well as battles. i know you would need alot of these practise missions but it could be tied in with the game like you can only do wall ride tricks in battles after you have succeeded in all the necessary practise sessions e.g. all the F level practise missions like accelarating, jumping, grinding etc

I think you are onto something with the missions. I think the best way to do it, is to have PvP AT battles and missions (not just practice runs, but quests) for gaining experience. Also, race courses and maybe a version of that AT version of american football.

I dont know if this has been mentioned or not, but there is already a game out there that is very simillar to air gear for the x-box. (I think it even has the same soundtrack). its old though, the graphics suck too. I'll get the name when I get back home.

Edit: Name is jetset radio future

Yep, already mentioned it (I hate it when people don't read threads, and people wonder why they get banned for not reading the rule threads), and Jet Set/Grind Radio on PS1.

As a future game designer, i realy think that manking a AG mmo is a good idea, but it only can be possible with a instance mmo type game like Guild War (if you quit the city you are alone with your team, and you can't see other player unless you are in a city) City could be replace by basement underground or rooftop.
    OR
When you engage in a fight, you are teleport in a area that look like the place you where, but you can't flee, and only you and your team can fight the enemy. So if your not a bunch off people performing trick in the same ares (30 people) the server will not rush that much

For the monster probleme, it could be easy to make other storm rider and maybe cops. you could see mean storm rider steeling stuff and you just have to kick ther A$$ to get the money or item and them you have the choice to give it back to the owner or keep it for yourself (this can involve a carma stat that say if you are a bad or good storm rider)

To gain exp, you could do trick (low xp), beat other SR or cops(monster low-medium xp), do quest or mission (medium-hight xp) and do pvp / tvt / gvg (hight xp)

ya quests sound cool too, but what would an ag quest be like? i guess placing a certain amount of your stickers in an area that you control, or making deliveries or something, but i'm finding it hard to think of alot of quests that would fit in with the theme, but if you coupled it with training it could work nicely.

lets team up and make it!!! bleh, your thinking too much in the way of an mmorpg, if i was to make this online i rather not have monsters to fight, because to me what i like about air gear was the flying in the sky and running thru a big city in the air and such, i mean i would be mad if i had to grind monsters to lvl. haha but i would think a jsrf mmo would be made before an air gear one, ign.com already suggested that jsrf would make a pretty good mmo, and in a sense i rather play jsrf online, i mean yous till have motorized skates and tricks put you also have TAGGING!! woot woot
