Default is the english volumes worth it?

hey first off im sorry if this has already been discussed somewhere but i couldnt find it, if it is could you direct me to it? anyway iv read a couple of translated volumes of air gear and i like it, but i noticed that my local book store recently got the first 2 volumes of air gear in english and i was wondering if people think their worth getting. i read a couple of reviews and generally people say that the english version is pretty good (i.e. uncensored), but after what cmx did to tenjou tenge im a bit warry of their editing of oh! great's work, anyway i was just wondering what the fans thought of it and what kind of changes they made and how they effect its quality. thanks in advance.

p.s. i think there's 2 english versions 1 by Del ray and 1 by Tanoshimi i don't know if there is a difference between them. and the title is supposed to say "are the english volumes worth it?"

well, in a sense, if you feel like redeeming yourself for getting the downloads then yes. Personally i think they are worth it, cuz even though i got my computer, i like being able to hold a book in my hands you know?

I've picked them up, simply because I enjoy the series and think they're good enough that I don't mind supporting the author and buying them after reading online.

Same with anime, for shows like Full Metal Panic, I picked up all of those even though I'd seen them since they put a great effort into getting great VAs and its a solid series.

ya i agree i think the people who translate air gear and tenjou tenge do a great job but there's somthing special about actually owning the authors work. but if im going to spend the money on the volumes i want to know im actually getting the authors work and not some publishers knee jerk editing like with tenjou tenge (even though almost all of the editing was to make more money from it as a 13+ title). so in your opinion did they do anything that detracted from the original? sorry for all the questions but i dont want buyers remorse you know?

theres a few edits in the text but none you will really notice, moestly its slang stuff, and some of it is jokes that don't really work in english, they didn't do a literal translation basicly.

the part in the first vol where there talking about the girl who was raped is kinda taken out. but thats the only thing i can think of, theres a review of the first vol comparing delrey to the literal japanese somewhere not sure of the link.

the only visual edit was the cover of vol 2 to give simca long pants instead of chaps and hot pants.

over all delrey is pretty good and havn't changed much. I would say it was worth it (though I'm curious what there going to do with agito and his ever so favourite word fuck.)

but then I have the first 2 volumes, the scanlated volumes the raws and the japanese tankouban......

Whats the deal with Tenjho Tenge? Was the English release not very good?

ok i am speaking to you now as a tenjou tenge fan. do not buy the cmx release it is so heavly edited it is not even the same work anymore, i really wanted it too because i perfer it over air gear and i really wanted to own a copy of oh! greats work, but the english one will just annoy you i mean they turned an 18+ into a 13+ thats just not right. thanks for all the help people, i did a little more research and found out some stuff. firsty the main guy at del ray cant remember who, said that do to fan complients (yay) the reviesed version of air gear vol 1 will have the rape references in it on pages 58,95 and 98 (i think those are the right pages), so check those to see which copy you have. he said he wont change the front cover of vol 2 but if you live in the uk as i do , del rays uk branch Tanoshimi left the cover the same as the original and it seems their less fond of censoring than their american counterparts. thanks again for the help i think i might go buy volume 1 see if i like it

my sister owns the Airgear volumes, the translation is good the pages are clean the pictures are sharp... theres really no reason not to buy it. and airgear is a bit toned down compared to Tenjo Tenge so its no reason to bias on the base of censorship

I thought the author only got a small percentage of sales, and that most of his income comes from the companies paying him to draw?
